Originating from China, the meyer lemon is a hybrid of a mandarin and lemon tree.  The original Meyer lemon tree was susceptible to Citrus Tristeza.  This disease eventually killed millions of citrus trees across the world.  Improved Meyer lemon was the one disease and virus free lemon tree that survived this disease.  Introduced by the University of CA in 1975.
